Universal equinoctial ring dial

Universal equinoctial ring dial for all latitudes. This is a standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The suspension ring is flat, is attached to a bracket which is riveted to the ring and moves in the grooved rim of the meridian ring. There is a latitude scale with 'S' and 'N' marked at either side of the zero line, a scale for determining the solar altitude and zenith distance, and two hour scales: one of which is on the obverse side of the equinoctial ring, the other on the inner-rim. There is also a date scale, a declination scale and a zodiac scale. The equinoxes are marked at 21 March and 21 ½ September.

This is an uncharacteristically late version of the universal equinoctial ring dial, which was not often made in the 19th century. The months have numbered days on the date scale, which is unusual, as is the numbering of the zodiac scale. The form of the suspension piece is uncommon. It is signed 'J. Newman Lisle St. London.'
