Armillary equinoctial pedestal dial
Armillary equinoctial pedestal dial for latitude 51° 30' North. Brick and stone plinth, on which is set a bell made of bell-metal. The armillary dial is positioned on top of the bell. It consists of a meridian ring, an equatorial ring and a further three rings perpendicular to the meridian ring (one at 90° to the equatorial ring, the other two each at 45° to the equatorial ring). The axis of the dial is marked by a long thin rod which has been restored to its original arrow shape. The equatorial ring has an hour scale in its northern half, numbered clockwise VI-XII, I-VI. There are no other markings on the instrument. It is a simplified armillary sphere in which the shadow of the axis marks the time on an hour scale on the equinoctial circle. It was made for the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
