Horizontal pedestal dial
Horizontal pedestal dial for latitude 8° North. The dial has a circular dial-plate with an hour circle and wind rose, and three screw holes for attachment to a base. The gnomon is triangular and stretches right to the edge of the dial at both ends, running from North to South. There are eight points of the compass, named by English initials. 'Ceylon LAT 8°N' is engraved near the southern edge.
This particular dial is very unusual since it was made for a very low latitude. Instruments such as this are uncommon, although some survive in the West Indies. The 8° parallel (for which this dial was made) runs across the centre of Sri Lanka.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
