Horizontal pedestal dial

Forged horizontal pedestal dial with no measurable latitude. This instrument comprises a brass horizontal dial with an octagonal volvelle mounted above. The hollow cylindrical brass base has a compass inset into the top and a horizontal dial engraved. At the South end of the compass, a rod gnomon projects at an angle. The hour angles are very inaccurately drawn (they clearly do not have a common intersection). At the other side of the plate from the gnomon, an iron pillar supports the inclined octagonal brass volvelle. This carries two rotatable discs with hour scales and poor representations of the zodiac symbols.

Engraved at the top of the plate is the fake signature: 'Horologio delle hore dallevare e tramontare del Sole C. Guadagni fece MDCCLVII' (Dial of the rising and setting of the Sun.C. Guadagni made it 1757). The sundial on this instrument is so poorly engraved, it cannot be used to tell the time. The false signature of Guadagni also appears on AST0277.

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
