Analemmatic dial

Analemmatic dial for 38° North. This dial is constructed as a diptych instrument with two leaves of black card, coated with black plastic, that fold together. The inside of the dial has cream-coloured paper stuck to the leaves. Leaf Ib features a sunface and a motto on the ribbon below: 'Behold and Begone about Your Work'. 'THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY SUNDIAL' is written at the top of the leaf. Leaf IIa contains the analemmatic dial. The horizontal dial has a string gnomon attached between the two leaves. Inside the horizontal hour scale is written 'Add 1 Hr. during Daylight Saving Time'. Below this is a table for the equation of time. The elliptical dial is printed on a ribbon and within it is a declination scale divided solstice to solstice by zodiacal sign. There are also four arrows to show the path of the sun through the zodiac.

This dial is used with a long brass topped pin gnomon which is stored in a sheath at the edge of the lower leaf. It is accompanied by a booklet explaining its use. The example in the booklet makes use of a different set of figures for the equation of time, indicating that the equation has been adjusted to make sure that a complete conversion from local sun time to the mean time of the time zone occurs. Certainly the figures given on the dial itself are shifted approximately six minutes higher than their normal values. The dial is signed '© Eugene Schiavone 1975 Box 14263 San Francisco 94114'.
