Horizontal pedestal dial

Imitation horizontal pedestal dial for latitude 54° North. The dial comprises an octagonal base-plate resting on four screw legs. It has an hour-circle, inside which is a pierced gnomon decorated with scrollwork. The dial is painted to show almost complete cover with green patination; the engraving on the original is very worn. The original instrument comes from the churchyard of Barrow upon Humber, on the south side of the Humber estuary. It was loaned to the NMM for an exhibition on the Harrisons (James was John Harrison's brother), at which time facsimiles were made for the museum and for the church.

On the hour-circle, the following has been engraved: 'Robt. Kirke - Vic[a]r 1732 Israel Bouthby - Churchwarden Robt. Seargent - Churchwarden James Harrison Fecit'. The dial-plate and gnomon were made of a mixture of fibreglass and bronze dust with an aluminium core, and the upper surface of the plate and the gnomon were then painted to give the appearance of patination.
