Juan de Castro was a Portuguese naval officer and fourth viceroy of the Portuguese Indies. He overthrew Mahmud, king of Gujarat, in 1546 and subsequently took control of the town of Malacca. Below is map of the town of Malacca, located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula
De Castro wrote seminal pilot books on navigation (Roteiros) and also made pioneer experimental investigations of the variation of the magnetic compass.
