Horizontal dial

Horizontal dial for latitude 48° North. The dial-plate is octagonal and the hour-scale is depicted on a scroll. The hinged gnomon is shaped and decorated and folds flat when not in use. The compass is offset 9° West of North to allow for magnetic variation and the cardinal points are indicated by French names. There is acanthus decoration on the reverse as well as the maker's signature: 'Pierre Seuin A Paris'. The dial is supported by the compass well and two turned silver legs.

Like Roch Blondeau (see AST0482), Sevin was a maker of Butterfield dials and this instrument is related to those he made for use in multiple latitudes.
