Tycho Brahe
The full title of the print reads: TYCHO BRAHÉ, Astronome, Né Knud-Strup près d'Helsinborg en Dannemare le 29 xbre Mort à Prague 24 Octobre 1702.
This print forms part of the Herschel family's large prints and drawings collection. It was quite common in the 19th century to have such a collection kept in portolios brought out to consult, to browse and to show visitors. These collections were often self-conciously autobiographical and contained images that reflected their travels, interests and moral outlook.
Given the family's strong scientific and particularly astronomical roots, the presence of great historical astronomers, such as Tycho Brahe in this collection is no great surprise.
