Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 10°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The dial-plate is silver with a gilt-brass compass, which has a silver base. The compass has an unnumbered degree scale and the magnetic variation is given as 5° West of North. Engraved around the compass are two towns with their latitudes: 'Paris 48' and 'Wien [Vienna] 48'. The latitude arc is gilt-brass and divided [10°]-9[0°], while the silver hour-circle segment is numbered clockwise 3, IIII-XII, I-VIII, 9 on its obverse side and divided 3.30 am-8.30 pm on its inner rim. The gnomon and its support are gilt-brass and the plate is supported by three brass legs. The base of the compass is engraved with a table of latitudes of towns and cities in Europe.

This dial is very similar in style to those by Johann Martin, but the maker has not been identified. Engraved on its obverse side are the initials 'P M'.
