A bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with added epaulettes. Lettered beneath the image: ‘Richard, Earl Howe. A famous British Admiral, born in 1725. On June 1st, 1794, he totally vanquished one of the most powerful fleets that France had ever equipped for sea, and brought home seven ships of the line besides smaller vessels. Earl Howe died Augt. 5th. 1799; and a handsome monument is erecte to his memory in St. Paul’s Cathedral.’ Also lettered with the publication line: ‘London. William Darton & Son, 53 Holborn Hill.’ This print was published by William Darton and Son. The portrait may be derived from John Chapman’s earlier print (see PAD0117). The Darton family published books for children in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centures. The imprint ‘William Darton and Son’ at Holburn Hill was used by William Darton Jr. and his son, John Maw Darton, between 1830 and 1836. (Updated June 2019.)
