Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitude 10°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

It has a silvered brass dial-plate. The compass has cardinal points marked by French initials and the magnetic variation is indicated at 25° West of North. The numbers 2, 8, 1 and 2 have been punched on to the base of the compass. The needle is rusty and is surmounted by a brass conical pivot. Around the edge of the compass and the dial-plate, there is a simple beaded border. Both the latitude arc and the hour ring are made of silvered brass. The hour ring's obverse side is divided clockwise VI-XII, I-VI, and the remainder is engraved with a repeating pattern. The gnomon is bent and it, as well as its support, are made of brass. There is a geometric pattern on the back of the compass and no table of latitudes.

This is a very basic version of the Augsburg dial with a rather poor quality of engraving. Poor workmanship is also shown in the fact that the hour ring is not set symmetrically on its hinge. The compass points are marked in French, suggesting that this was made for the French market. Alternatively, it may have been an amateur piece made in France.
