Universal equinoctial ring dial

Universal equinoctial ring dial for all latitudes. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The reverse side of the meridian ring is blank. There are hour scales on the obverse side and the inner-rim of the equinoctial ring. There is a date scale and a zodiac scale, and the equinoxes are marked at 20 March and 20 September. Spanish dials are relatively uncommon, but the use of 'E' for January implies a Spanish origin.

The style of the instrument is quite different from those made in France, Germany, England and Italy. It is a very simple piece with no table of latitudes and no altitude quadrant. A similar instrument in the British Museum (registration no. 1863,7-22.1) is smaller but engraved with the same sort of numerals.

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
