Universal equinoctial ring dial
Universal equinoctial ring dial for latitudes 0°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
This dial is for northern latitudes only. The bracket is copper and seems to be a replacement. Both the outer edges and the rim of the meridian ring are grooved. The degree scale on the meridian ring is divided clockwise from top [0°]-[90°], and the reverse side is plain.
There are hour scales on both the obverse side and the inner-rim of the equinoctial ring. There is a date scale and the equinoxes are marked by stars at 20 March and 20 September. The ends of the bridge are decorated with a simple floral design and generally the engraving is of a poor quality. An Italian origin is suggested by the 'L' for July (Luglio). It is a very simple piece with scales for latitude, hours and date only.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
