Ring dial
Ring dial for latitude 43° North. The ring is made of brass and carries a fixed suspension piece and a figure-of-eight suspension ring. On the outer face there is a date scale marked by month either side of the central collar. The equinoxes are marked at approximately 10 March and 10 September. The inner face has an hour scale set on a separate bridging circle arc which is marked 5-12 and back to 7. It is also marked with 'S' and 'W' at the noon end of the hour-lines, possibly indicating summer and winter. There is a central sliding collar with a pinhole sight for the gnomon.
This dial was described as German when it entered the NMM collection. This could be supported by the approximate equinoctial dates and by the marks of 'S' and 'W' on the inner face.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
