Reclining dial

Forged reclining dial with no measurable latitude. This dial is made of brass and set on a wooden base. A turned and decorated brass pedestal supports the dial itself. The hour-plate is attached to the column at approximately 8° to the vertical. Engraved on the dial-plate is the fake signature: 'Meridiana fatta nella Specola a J.R. Vniversita Pisana anno 1753. P.c. Gvadagni Fece.' (Sundial made in the observatory at the University of Pisa 1753. P.C. Guadagni made it.)

Other examples of these instruments can be found in the Whipple Museum (accession no. Wh: 0861) and in the Science Museum in Milan (inventory nos. 4067 and 4068). All of them carry the same inscriptions. The NMM instrument has a wooden base that has been painted to look like black marble.
