Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 6°-86° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass has a central eight-point rose and the needle is not blued. The remainder of the dial-plate is engraved with floral designs, flourishes and geometric patterns. The latitude arc is divided [6°]-[86°] and the hour ring is decorated with a simple pattern; its inner rim is numbered 3-12, 1-9. Hinged to the South side of the dial-plate, the plumb-bob support is elaborately shaped, engraved with foliate decoration and pierced to accommodate the plumb bob, which is missing. The dial is supported by three turned brass legs.

The back of the compass is signed 'And. Vogler' and engraved with a table of latitudes for places in Europe, surrounded by a wheatsheaf border. The table includes a Russian city (St Petersburg), which is unusual, and the list of places suggests that the dial was made for sale in the north of Germany. It is one of the more carefully engraved of Andreas Vogler's dials and is in good condition.
