Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 14°-84° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass is silvered and has an eight-point rose. The magnetic variation is indicated at 20° West of North and the glass plate is chipped. The remainder of the dial-plate is engraved with floral engravings and geometric designs. The latitude arc is divided [14°]-[84°].

The back of the compass is engraved with a table of latitudes, headed 'Eleva. Poli': for the cities of 'Augsburg 48, Par (Paris) 48' and 'Cracau (Krakow) 50'. The appearance of Augsburg and Paris might well be expected, but the addition of Krakow might seem unusual. Such an inclusion is common, however, in Vogler's latitude tables. It is a very simple dial and is signed 'And. Vogl' on the base of the compass.
