A View of the Great Harry built in the Reign of King Henry VIII
A line engraving of the 80-gun carrack or ‘great ship ‘Great Harry’ – also called Henry (or Henri) Grace a Dieu – running before the wind, her pennants flying and gunsmoke billowing off her starboard bow. Numerous figures are visible on deck. The ship is depicted in all her magnificence, with all her principal sails taut, creating a noticeable bow wave and wake as she ploughs through the water. Her numerous open gunports reveal her forbidding firepower. The engraving is based on an original by Hans Holbein the Younger.
