Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 10°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass has cardinal points named in Latin and a 16-point rose in the centre. A replacement needle, blued for North, is surmounted by a brass cylindrical pivot. The remainder of the dial-plate is engraved with foliate designs and edged by geometric borders. The latitude arc is divided [10°]-[90°]. Hinged to the South side of the dial-plate, the plumb-bob support is elaborately shaped and engraved with foliate decoration and pierced to accommodate the plumb bob. Supported by three brass legs and a flower, the dial-plate is engraved in the centre of the compass back. A table of latitudes for a few places in Europe appears on a disc in the lid of the case. The black octagonal leather case has blue silk lining and a broken hook fastening. The hinge is also broken.

This dial by Johann Georg Vogler is typical of the less expensive end of the range of Augsburg dials. On the base of the compass, it is signed 'Joh Georg Vogler in Augsp.'
