Augsburg dial
Augsburg dial for latitudes 20°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The dial-plate and the compass are silver. The compass has degree scales divided 40°-0°-40° around the North and South points. The cardinal points are given full Latin names and the rotatable disc, which displays a 12-point compass rose, has an engraved radial arrow to indicate the magnetic variation. The latitude arc is silver and divided 20°-9[0°]. A silver hour band is set inside a gilt-brass ring whose obverse side is engraved with a geometric design and whose outer rim is engraved with a pointing hand to mark the latitude on the latitude arc. The gnomon and its support are gilt-brass and the dial-plate is supported by three brass legs. Hinged to the South side of the dial-plate, the plumb-bob support is elaborately shaped, engraved with foliate decoration and pierced to accommodate the plumb bob.
The dial has a rather dilapidated black leather octagonal case with red silk lining and a hook fastener. Like the dial by Willebrand (See AST0300), this one has a rotatable disc in the compass for setting the magnetic variation. The East and West points of the compass have been interchanged by mistake. There is no table of latitudes, but it is possible that it was originally supplied on a piece of paper that has since been lost. The dial is signed 'NICOLAVS RUGENDAS IN AVGSP. 48. Gr' on the obverse side of the dial-plate.
