Study for ‘The Goodwins …’, 1874
A study for the picture which Wyllie exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874, the title taken from 'The Merchant of Venice' by Shakespeare – ‘The Goodwins, I think they call the place, a very dangerous flat, and fatal, where the carcasses of many a tall ship lie buried.’ Both the sketch and the painting – which is in the Russell Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth – show the very obvious influence of Turner whom Wyllie much admired.
