Promenade showing a fishing boat, swans, seabirds and people

A sketch drawn by William Lionel Wyllie. The sketch has been rendered in grey wash watercolour. On the right hand side of the image, stretching into the distance, is a walled promenade along the shore line. A jetty seems to come off the promenade in the distance. A line of trees stretches along the right hand side of the promenade. Built into the wall of the promenade is a short pillar with a lamppost on top. Eight figures walk along the promenade. Their features are not defined and they have been rendered in a loose expressive style. Only the two figures in the immediate foreground seem to be identifiable as a woman, on the left, and a man, on the right with a black hat. The sea does not seem to have been painted but its presence is indicated by the use of grey wash to depict the sand and rocks on the shoreline and several lines to indicate waves. A fishing boat is next to the promenade. Four men are depicted tending to the boat. The boat’s sails have been rolled up and the mast and boom are discernible. Two swans can be seen just on the boundary between land and sea. A flock of sea gulls circle around the boat and two are flying directly toward the viewer.
