Three sailing boats in a rough sea

A graphite sketch drawn by William Lionel Wyllie. The sketch depicts three sailing boats, sailing in the direction of the viewer. The boats appear to be come down over the crest of a large wave due to the angle of each vessel. It is difficult to discern any figures precisely but a single figure may be present at the back of each boat. Each boat has a single sail. The tempestuous sea is rendered through the use of strong, jagged shading. It is difficult to discern the interior of each boat. Some sketching on the left hand boat indicates some indecision on the part of the artist over where to place the mast. There are some curved, ridged lines at the bottom of the sketch but these do not seem to be a part of the sketch as they are not in the same style as the rest of the image.
