Analemmatic dial
Analemmatic dial for latitude 46° 18' North. This instrument has a rectangular dial-plate with the corners cut away and is set on three turned brass screw feet. The horizontal dial has an hour scale numbered clockwise V-XII, I-VII and a hinged brass gnomon with a string plumb line and brass bob suspended from its tip. At the base of the gnomon, an inscription reads 'Cadran Anallematique Pour 46d I8M' (Analemmatic sundial for 46° 18'). On the elliptical dial, the hour scale is marked on engraved ribbon and numbered clockwise V-XII, I-VII. A declination scale is marked either side of the meridian line and is divided solstice to solstice by month, also marked with the zodiac symbols. There is a slit down the middle within which a conical brass rod gnomon moves and can be adjusted for declination. This gnomon can be unscrewed from its mount. All the markings are enamelled in black.
The dial has a rectangular black leather case with red hessian lining and a brass hook. The latitude given on this dial corresponds with that of Mâcon in central France, but it may also be the latitude of an estate belonging to the person for whom this dial was made. It is clear from the unusual latitude that it was commissioned rather than bought on the spot. Within the elliptical hour-ring, it is signed 'E Baradelle AParis'.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
