Underwater view of a shoal of fish

This is a watercolour drawing by William Lionel Wyllie. It depicts a shoal of fish underwater. On the right hand side of the image there appears to be a rock, depicted in black, behind the fish. On the left, a grey column indicates another wall or column of rock. The fish swim between these two structures, stretching back into the image. Lighter yellow tones have been used at the bottom of the image to suggest the sea bed, and lighter blue tones have been used at the top of the image to indicate sunlight streaming through the water. The fish nearest the bottom of the image appear closer to the viewer and are depicting in more detail. Their eye, fins and gills are discernible. These details cannot be seen in the fish further back in the image, which are rendered as dark blue grey shapes. A grey band in the middle of the image perhaps indicates a drop in the sea floor. The image occupies most of the page. The top right corner and a strip at the bottom of the image have not been painted.

Study for Wyllie's oil painting 'Davy Jones's Locker', completed in 1890 (Museum no. ZBA5055).
