Underwater scene showing plant life, starfish and a shark
This is a watercolour drawing by William Lionel Wyllie. It depicts an underwater scene. The image has been rendered in an expressive style and objects appear blurred underwater. Wyllie has used a white grey colour for the sea floor. A starfish is possibly visible, in white on a darker grey patch of sand. Seaweed has been depicted throughout the image with expressive mark making in dark brown and yellow. Rough brushstrokes at the bottom of the image indicate texture in the sand. A dark blue grey tone has been used to indicate the expanse of water beyond the sea bed. The rough outline of a shark can be seen in the background of the image. At the bottom right hand side of the image there is a area of unpainted paper. There are some bright blue brushstrokes and a red brush mark in this area.
