Three flying fish.

This is a watercolour sketch by William Lionel Wyllie. It depicts three flying fish. At the bottom of the page are written the words ‘11 inches from nose to tip of tail. 13 inches wing tip to wing tip.’ The largest fish is at the bottom of the image and the smallest fish is in the middle. There is a blue smudge at the tail of the middle fish. All fish have been rendered in a similar way. Each fish is a silvery colour with patches of yellow and dark grey to indicate shadow. All fish have wide open mouths which have a pinkish hue. The wings of the fish have been rendered with expressive grey brushstrokes, as have the fins of the tail. Each eye has a light blue iris and large black pupil. A darker strip runs along the back of each fish and the underside has been left white.

Study for Wyllie's oil painting 'Davy Jones's Locker', completed in 1890 (Museum no. ZBA5055). The drawing is annotated.
