Seven fishes

This is a watercolour sketch by William Lionel Wyllie. It depicts seven fish, possibly carp. There is no water in this image but the fish swim around the page as if they are in a pool or river. The fish are all the same species. They have a large round head, and bodies that taper to a point. They have large pectoral fins but a small tail fin. The eyes of the fish are close together and located at the front of the head. The two fish on the furthest left nad side are not as well defined as the other five fish. All the fish are a grey brown colour and the fins are a pale grey blue. Study for Wyllie's oil painting 'Davy Jones's Locker', completed in 1890 (Museum no. ZBA5055).
