Four flying fish
A watercolour drawing by William Lionel Wyllie. Four flying fish are depicted against a deep blue background. The varying sizes of the fish gives the impression that they are moving through the water at a distance from one another. The largest fish occupies the foreground of the work, and exhibits particularly detailed brushwork to illustrate its sleek scaled surface, gleaming eye and feathered fins. The surrounding blue waters are conveyed through comparatively rough and expressive brushstrokes. To the right of the drawing is a small sketch of a flying fish, completed in graphite.
