A hunt with a pack of dogs

A watercolour drawing by William Lionel Wyllie. A hunting party is depicted on horseback, accompanied by a large pack of foxhounds. The hunters are depicted in a semi-circular formation around the foxhounds, which occupy the centre of the composition. Three of the hunters are dressed in scarlet coats, tan jodhpurs and exhibit black riding hats. The scene is rendered in loose brushstrokes, with patches of the composition left blank to convey the white patches that are contained in the pattern of the foxhounds’ shorthair coats. The roughly cut edges of the paper suggest that this image was originally surrounded by multiple sketches.
