Shepherd and flock of sheep
A watercolour sketch by William Lionel Wyllie. Four separate scenes are depicted in horizontal registers. The top register shows a shepherd herding a flock of sheep in a flat, open field. The figures are rendered abstractly, although the sketch includes the detail of the shepherd’s staff. Below this scene is a study of ferns (possibly bracken?). The palette consists of grey, green and yellow hues. Displayed in the third register is a herd of sheep moving through a meadow, which is surrounding by low, rolling hills. The figure of a shepherd appears standing to the right of the herd, surveying the movement of the sheep (possibly with a dog by his side). In the bottom register is the sketch of a male figure in a grey suit. To the right of the isolated figure is a sketch of three female figures standing on a sandy terrain, with green pasture in the distance. Several small brown watermarks are visible along the top border of the work.
