The shepherd surveys the scene in the left corner, holding either a walking stick or a firearm. A stone cottage appears in the distance, articulating additional space between the field and the sea. A flock of birds glide over the sea in the background. Very small, faint brown water marks are visible on the surface of the work, most notably along the upper section.
