Shepherd with a flock of sheep

A graphite and watercolour sketch by William Lionel Wyllie. A shepherd is depicted herding a flock of sheep through a field located by the sea. A corresponding study in graphite is featured above the wash study. The sheep are depicted in varying positions as they graze in the field. The shepherd surveys the scene in the left corner, holding either a walking stick or a firearm. A stone cottage appears in the distance, articulating additional space between the field and the sea. A flock of birds glide over the sea in the background. Very small, faint brown water marks are visible on the surface of the work, most notably along the upper section.
