Universal equinoctial ring dial

Universal equinoctial ring dial for latitudes 0°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The dial is for northern latitudes only. A slider moves in the grooved rim of the meridian ring and has a pointer to indicate the latitude. The latitude scale is divided clockwise [0°]-90°. The remainder of the obverse side of the meridian ring is engraved with a table of latitudes for places in Europe that continues on the reverse. The obverse side of the equinoctial ring also carries a table of latitudes, mainly for places in Germany. On the reverse side and the inner-rim is an hour scale. There is a date scale, no declination scale and the equinoxes are marked at 20 March and 22 September.

The bridge ends, supports and equinoctial ring stops are adorned with acanthus decoration and the slider for the pinhole gnomon is shaped as an acanthus leaf. Cities and towns on this dial are arranged in order of latitude and each latitude is only recorded at the end of the list to which it belongs. It is signed 'Johann Willebrand, in Augspurg' on the obverse side of the meridian ring. A very similar instrument is in the British Museum (registration no. 1897,12-30.2); another was included in the sale of the Greppin Collection in 1975; and a third is in the National Technical Museum in Prague.
