Butterfield dial

Butterfield dial for latitudes 40°-60° North. Standard four-scale dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The third and fourth scales are numbered 4-12, 1-8 and IIII-XII, I-VIII respectively. The whole of the space inside the innermost scale is filled with acanthus leaves surrounded by further leaf decoration. The cardinal and quadrantal points on the compass are indicated by French initials while the intermediate points are marked by arrowheads. The blued needle has an open circle indicating North, an arrow indicating South and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. The gnomon is decorated with a leaf design. The compass base is marked Premier Cadran (First dial) and carries a table of latitudes that continues on the rest of the dial-plate back.

This dial is very reminiscent of Butterfield's own work with a similar use of a rather more restrained style in the Roman numerals. It is signed 'George AParis' on the reverse side.
