Butterfield dial

Butterfield dial for latitudes 40°-60° North. Standard four-scale dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The third scale is marked for 45° and numbered 4-12, 1-8 and the fourth is marked for 40°. In the centre and to the south of the compass are engravings of shells. The cardinal and quadrantal points on the compass are marked in French around a central circular flower. There are degree scales for magnetic variation, one west of the North point and one east of the South point, divided clockwise 30°-[0°]. The variation is actually marked by an arrow at 16° West of North. The west side of the gnomon has an engraving of a shell along its upright edge and it is also decorated with leaf designs. The gnomon brace on the reverse side of the dial-plate is decorated with shells. The compass base, which has a flower engraved at its centre, is marked 'Premier Cadran' (First dial) and carries a table of latitudes for European cities and towns, continuing on the rest of the dial-plate back.

The dial has a black leather octagonal case with green velvet lining and a metal push-button clasp. This dial is much like the other Butterfield dials, but the standard acanthus design is replaced by shells as the central motif for the decoration. It is signed 'Baradelle AParis'. The list of towns is very similar to that on one of the dials by Butterfield (AST0342).
