Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial
Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial for 50° North (0°-80° North for equinoctial dial). This is a standard Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The dial is divided into four leaves. There is an hour scale on leaf Ia, inside which are various Jesuit symbols: the initials 'IHS', a heart with three arrows projecting out from it, a cross surrounded by a sunburst and tongues of flame around the circumference. On leaf IIb is a latitude scale for [0°]-[65°]. Leaf IIa displays a silver elliptical hour scale, a printed compass card with an hour scale and a radial table of latitudes. A 16-point compass rose appears at the centre, marked with a fleur-de-lys for North. There is evidence of a degree scale around the edge of the compass card (part of it appears on the western edge). Leaf IIb displays no perpetual calendar. The centre of the volvelle is engraved with tulips and poppies around the signature, 'Charles Bloud ADieppe'. There is 'pecked' ornamentation all round the sides of the leaves as well.
Like AST0487, this dial was made for a Jesuit owner. The table of latitudes is filled with a wide variety of places throughout the world, including India, the islands of the Pacific, North and South America and Egypt, as well as a small number of places in Europe. The list runs west from Spain around the world, returning eventually to Paris.
