Horizontal dial

Portable horizontal dial for latitude 49° North. This dial is formed out of a circular brass box lid. On the outside, there is foliate decoration. On the inside is an hour-circle numbered clockwise with an extra '3' punched near the centre. The compass is marked with a North-South line; North being indicated by a cross. The needle is blued, has a bar for North and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. There is a glass plate over all. The gnomon (which is presently detached) is hinged, shaped, folds flat when not in use and is secured by a pivoted catch set between the 4 pm and 5 pm hour-lines.

This is an unremarkable, inexpensive dial from the early years of the 20th century. There is a slight oddity in the presence of an extra '3' punched near the centre of the dial: this was the mark used by Jacob Karner when signing his dials and it is possible that some connection was intended.
