View along the River Parrett at low water at Bridgwater, Somerset

A view of the River Parrett looking up stream towards the Town Bridge at low tide from West Quay at Bridgwater. Shipping is moored to the banks on either side. The ketch GLOSTER PACKET (1824) is on the wooden grid under repair below the Somerset Trading Company building. This is a distant port bow view. Clinker and carvel-built rowing boats are grounded on the mud in the foreground. On the far right is the back of a cart with the notice 'A. PEACE. -N [CORN] & HAY MERCHANT / [word obscured] REMOVER STORER &c'. Francis Frith & Co negative no. 27896.

In Mercantile Navy List as "GLOUCESTER PACKET" but name on bow is plainly GLOSTER PACKET. In the 1897 edition of Kelly's Directory of Somerset, it has the entry: 'Peace Alfred, contractor for removing & warehousing furniture &c.; corn, hay, straw & forage merchant; importer of potatoes, general carrier, warehouseman, forwarding, shipping & insurance agent, owner of Bristol & Cardiff steamers; agent Anglo-American Oil Co. West quay; & at Bournemouth, Bristol, Midsomer Norton & Cardiff.' The company was established in 1866.
