Magnetic dial

Magnetic dial for latitude 52° North, in the form of a watch with a suspension ring. The dial-plate is silver and is free to rotate with the movement of a bar magnet on the underside, so that it is correctly oriented. It has 32 compass points marked around the edge, 15 by English initials and North by a fleur-de-lys. Within this is an hour ring numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII, with a sunface at the South point. A simple silver gnomon is set on the dial-plate. The dial has a domed glass cover.

It is uncommon to find magnetic dials in the form of a watch - the form more often used for compass dials. The use of silver for the dial-plate is also uncommon. The style of the dial-plate follows Porter's magnetic dials (AST0421 and AST0242).
