Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 10°-80° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass has been incorrectly marked ‘OP’ for East, instead of ‘OR’, and also ‘E’ for ‘ME’ (South). The magnetic variation is indicated at 30° West of North (but North itself is offset 15° East of North). The remainder of the dial-plate is engraved with geometric designs. The latitude arc is divided [10°]-80°. The back of the compass is engraved with a table of latitudes together with the maker’s signature ‘And Vogl’.

This is a large Augsburg dial of very simple design, made for the mass market. One of the places on the latitude table, ‘Pica’, is unidentifiable. Comparison with other dials by Vogler suggests that the word should have been ‘Prag’ [Prague]. The dial has an octagonal black leather case on which are traces of gold tooling.
