Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 6°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The dial-plate is gilt-brass, the compass is silver and the magnetic variation is marked at 16° West of North. The signature 'Johann Martin a Augsburg 48' is engraved round the compass, along with the names of two French cities and their latitudes. The latitude arc is silver and divided [6°]-9[0°]. The hour ring consists of a thin silver ring with a silver band set inside it. The obverse side of the ring is engraved with a geometric design, the outer rim is engraved with a pointing hand to mark the latitude on the latitude arc and the inside of the band is numbered 3-12, 1-9. The gnomon and its support are gilt-brass.

Hinged to the South side of the dial-plate is an elaborately shaped silver plumb-bob support, engraved with acanthus decoration and pierced to accommodate the gilt-brass plumb bob. The plumb bob support has a gilt-brass brace, shaped and decorated with leaf design. The compass base is engraved with a table of latitudes for towns and cities in Europe. The appearance of Lyon and Paris on the front of the dial-plate and the French signature suggest that this dial was made specifically for the French market.
