Universal equinoctial ring dial

Universal equinoctial ring dial for all latitudes. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

'S' and 'N' are marked either side of the zero of the latitude scale. There is also a scale for the altitude quadrant. The obverse side of the equinoctial ring is plain and the reverse has an hour scale, as does the inner rim. There is a date scale on the bridge, a zodiac scale and also a declination scale. The equinoxes are marked at 10 March and 12 ½ September.

This dial coincides with the beginning of the fashion for very large equinoctial ring dials. While heavy, these instruments had advantages in allowing the division of the scales to very small numbers. It is signed 'Edm: Culpeper Londini fecit' on the obverse side of the meridian ring. This piece contrasts well with the miniature dial by Culpeper (see AST0306).
