Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial

Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial for 50° North (0°-80° North for equinoctial dial). Standard Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The dial is split into four leaves. Leaf Ia comprises an equinoctial dial and a polar dial whose scales are edged on both sides by typical Dieppe 'pecked' ornamentation. Leaf Ib features a lunar volvelle of silvered brass (much of the silvering has worn away) consisting of a fixed disc and two rotatable discs with pointers. Leaf IIa contains a horizontal dial and a magnetic azimuth dial. The horizontal hour scale is marked around the edge of the compass bowl. A black string gnomon is set for a latitude of 50° and is attached between the two leaves for use with the horizontal dial.

There is a silvered brass elliptical scale in the base of the compass bowl for the magnetic azimuth dial. The cardinal points are named in Latin on the compass and there is a gazetteer for 19 French towns. The (replacement) needle is made of steel, is in the form of an arrow and is covered by a cracked glass plate. On leaf IIb is a date scale divided to month, in French. A slot in the left-hand side of the lower leaf contains a silver pin gnomon for use with the equinoctial dial. It is held in place by a pewter hook fastener. It is unusual for this pin gnomon to have survived. Apart from the different ornamentation, this dial is very similar to AST0362.
