The Temple of the Winds at Shugborough, in Staffordshire. Engraved for Walpoole's New Complete British Traveller
Shugborough Hall, Staffs., was built by Admiral Lord Anson from the prize money from his capture of the 'Nuestra Senora de Covadonga' during his voyage round the world in the 'Centurion', and was subsequently remodelled by his collateral heirs (since he had no chidren) who later became Earls of Lichfield. The house is now a National Trust property and still contains paintings and other memorabilia relating to Anson, and the grounds include the Temple of the Winds and a triumphal arch. A number of paintings formerly at Shugborough are now in the NMM, as is his model of the 'Centurion' built for a niche in the house. PvdM 6/04
