Polyhedral dial

Polyhedral dial for latitudes 10°-75° North (base latitude 49° North). This wooden cube dial is set on a wooden base-plate supported by four small feet. Both the obverse side of the base and five sides of the cube are faced with printed and coloured paper. Set in to the base is a compass with an eight-point rose and a magnetic variation scale divided [0°]-40° (the variation is marked at 22° West of North). A turned wooden pillar, with a pivoted ball joint halfway up, supports the cube.

The horizontal dial is marked with an hour scale and has a central depiction of a wreath. The South vertical dial is marked 'SUD' and the North vertical dial is marked 'NORD'. The West vertical has a diagonal hour scale and a depiction of a man and woman holding the ends of a garland. The East vertical dial has a diagonal hour scale and a depiction of a man and woman holding the latitude arc. There is a metal loop at the top of this, to which is attached a string plumb line and lead bob, which also act as a latitude indicator. The five gnomons are shaped and made of brass.

This dial is of particular interest for the very extensive table of latitudes that has survived with it (the largest latitude list in the NMM collection). This table provides the latitudes for 185 cities in Europe and three in North America. It is the only table in the collection to include a latitude for Greenwich. The dial is signed 'D. BERINGER' on its North face.
