A nineteenth-century engraving from a painting by Tomblesons, showing the Tower of London as seen from the Upper Pool. Merchant ships on either side of the river frame the Tower. The Tower was originally founded by William I of England better known as William the Conqueror 1066-87, it was greatly extended and improved over a period of some 900 years and today stands as the Tower of London, with the Great Tower now known as the White Tower.
