Universal equinoctial ring dial

Universal equinoctial ring dial for all latitudes, with fitted box. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The suspension ring pierces the swivel ball stem, which is attached to a bracket, which itself is attached to a ring that moves in the grooved rim of the meridian ring. The latitude scale has 'S' and 'N' marked at either side of the zero line and there is a scale for determining the solar altitude and zenith distance. On the equinoctial ring, there are two hour scales, one on the obverse side and one on the inner-rim. There is a date scale, a zodiac scale, a declination scale and the equinoxes are marked at 20 March and 23 September.

The dial has a tooled red leather case, lined with red baize, which contains a table of the equation of time that seems to be contemporary. The engraving on the dial is of a high quality and it is very similar in design to AST0408. It is signed 'Dollond London' on the obverse side of the meridian ring. The signature probably represents Peter Dolland who is known to have made sundials.

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
