Astronomical compendium

Astronomical compendium for latitudes 42°-54° North. It is split into six leaves and contains a table of latitudes, a horizontal dial, a lunar volvelle and almanac and a planispheric projection of the North celestial hemisphere. Leaf Ia displays a Prophatius astrolabe quadrant, inscribed as being a 'Device for finding the height of the Pole for any day desired'. Leaf Ib shows a map of central Europe marked with rivers, seas and hills, as well as a large number of towns.

Leaf IIa contains the horizontal dial for latitudes of 42, 45, 48, 51 and 54. A silver compass is set into the centre with the cardinal points marked in Latin and the magnetic variation given as 11° East of North. Leaf IIb has a table of latitudes in concentric circles for places mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. Leaf IIIa carries a planispheric astrolabe plate. Pivoted to the centre is a ring representing the ecliptic and a rule for showing the position of the sun. There is also a rule for the moon but this is a later addition. Leaf IIIb features the lunar volvelle, aspectarium and almanac. Circular compendia by Schissler are rarer than their rectangular counterparts.

This particular instrument includes the unusual feature of a Prophatius astrolabe quadrant on the outer cover. The quadrant is a compression of the stereographic astrolabe plate to a quarter circle and it can be used in the same manner as an astrolabe for time measurement and the solution of astronomical problems. The signature is punched around the sides: 'CHRISTOPHORVS SCHISSLER ME FACIEBAT AVGVSTE VINDELICORUM ANNO DOMINI . 15 . 60'.
