Compass dial
Compass dial for latitude 52° North. The dial is set over the compass. The dial-plate has a brass ring with an hour scale and the remainder is open (apart from the gnomon supports) to reveal the compass. The hour scale is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII and displays simple decoration, as does the gnomon support. The gnomon, which is shaped and simply decorated on one side, is hinged and folds flat when not in use.
The compass, made of printed card, has a degree scale 0°-90°-0°-90°-0°, and a decorated rose for 32 points with a central circular acanthus design. The cardinal points are marked by English names except for North, which is indicated by a fleur-de-lys. The remaining points are marked by English initials. The needle, once blued, has a cross bar for North and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. A glass plate covers all. There is also a compass card pasted into the screw-fit lid. This dial is similar in style to AST1143, although the quality of engraving is higher.
